BACK YARDS

North Side:  Thaw House

The landlord of this multi-dwelling home on the north side of Pittsburgh renovated the entire inside leaving all of the beautiful original trim, fire places and character of the historic home.  This year it was time to tackle the outside to provide a communal tenant space for grilling, gathering and improve the aesthetics.  Renters park in the back of the house and essentially the back yard is what welcomes them home.  Revisit this site next year to see spring and summer pictures.  One of the residents loves to garden and once we had the bones in place she fills in with annuals and perennials.

Sunset Hills:  DIY (Homeowner Installed)  Front and Back Yard

I wish I had taken before pictures.  The lesson here is that hillsides can be beautiful and functional.  The transformation was amazing.  This homeowner's sweat equity in installing the patio, wall and landscaping shows that with some braun and great planning, all things are possible.

Nevillewood Residence

After client installed patio, fireplace, and paths by contractor, we were engaged to landscape around the new addition and create privacy.  More mature pictures will be posted in spring/summer 2016.

East End Fire Pit--DIY

This hardworking couple built the fire pit before hiring me to design the area as well as redo a large Island in the front yard (See front yard designs for pics).  Though they live not far from the zoo, deer were quit and issue.  They have quite an oasis for being so close to the city.

Side Perennial Garden, Arborvitae Privacy Screen, and Garden Gate

Views in all designs are critical to consider in the master planning.  The key design challenges were the hill, incorporationg play yard, views and transitioning the yard as the familie's needs changed.

Redesign of Back Yard:  Virginia Manor Residence

After a major construction project, the owners decided it was time to make the yard functional and beautiful for their family.

Sunset Hills Perennial Garden

Perennial gardens are loads of work....pruning, dead heading, cutting back.  This one is well work the work with waves of color all season.

Mt. Lebanon Screening and Update

This lovely South Hills couple removed a swimming pool.  After filling in the back yard they had to update their hillside and add screening to the back. We used Viburnum, Angelica Blue Juniper, and Arborvitae.
